Dr. Michael Watson

Trained originally in medieval European literature at the universities of Cambridge and Manchester, Dr. Watson came to Japan in 1980. His doctoral thesis from Oxford analyses the narrative style and structure of Heike monogatari (The Tale of the Heike). Professor of Japanese culture and literature at Meiji Gakuin University, he has published articles in English and Japanese on literary aspects of the Heike and its reception into visual art and the noh theatre. Other interests include narrative theory, translation studies, and the use of electronic resources in the humanities. Since 1999 he has run the pmjs mailing list in premodern Japanese studies and managed its web site .
