Dr. Robert Hellyer

Dr. Hellyer received his MA from Stanford University in 1995, and his Ph.D. from the same university in 2001, specializing in early modern and modern Japanese history. In 1996 he came to Tokyo with a Ministry of Education scholarship, and became a visiting researcher in the Historiographical Institute of Tokyo University. During one of his subsequent visits there he addressed us in April 2000 on his family's tea business, which sold green tea to the United States in the late 19th century. From August 2001 to July 2005 he was assistant professor in the Department of History and International Studies at Allegheny College, Meadville, PA, and during his last year there he was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University. Since August 2005 he has been an assistant professor in the Department of History at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC. He has contributed a number of articles to scholarly journals, and taken part in university colloquia and been a presenter at academic and professional conferences, sometimes speaking in Japanese.
