Prof. David Burleigh

Prof. Burleigh was born in the North of Ireland and studied Social Science there at the University of Ulster in Coleraine. He lived in London for several years, working for a bank and then an advisory service for the homeless, before coming to Japan. He has lived in Japan for over twenty years and taught at a variety of institutions. He is currently associate professor at Ferris University in Yokohama. He submitted a thesis on Helen Waddell's early writings for an advanced degree in English Literature from the University of Sussex, and his edition of Waddell's writings on Japan was published last year in Dublin. He has also done a certain amount of collaborative translation, mainly of poetry and haiku, including two small anthologies. The anthology of modern haiku that he worked on with Kôko Katô, called A Hidden Pond, received an award from the Haiku Society of America. He maintains links with haiku groups in Japan and overseas, and is a member of the Working Group for the Masaoka Shiki International Haiku Awards in Matsuyama. He serves on the committee of the Japan branch of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures. He also writes occasionally for The Japan Times, as, for example recently, on January 31st.
