Dr. Janine Beichman

Dr. Beichman received her doctorate from Columbia University and is professor in the Department of Japanese Literature, Daito Bunka University. She is the author of the literary biographies Masaoka Shiki: His Life and Works and Embracing the Firebird: Yosano Akiko and the Birth of the Female Voice in Modern Japanese Poetry, and also of Drifting Fires, an original Noh play which has been performed in Japan and the United States. Her translations include Setouchi Jakuchô The End of Summer, and two collections of the poet and critic Ôoka Makoto's work: Beneath the Sleepless Tossing of the Planets: Selected Poems and Poems for All Seasons: An Anthology of Japanese Poetry from Earliest Times to the Present (also published as A Poet's Anthology). She is currently at work on the second volume of her Yosano Akiko biography.
