Dr. George Sioris

For many, Dr. Sioris needs no introduction, as he was our President from 1995-98, and addressed us twice during that period, at the time when he was the Greek ambassador here. Others will know him from his regular column on the Asian scene in the Japan Times. Dr. Sioris was born in Athens, and after studying law and French literature he worked initially as a journalist before joining the diplomatic service in 1964. The early part of his career took him to New York, Tokyo, New Delhi, Strasbourg, Beijing and Washington, D.C., and in 1983 he became an ambassador, first to India (with parallel accreditation to 11 other Asian countries), then to Thailand, and finally to Tokyo. He retired in 1998, and now resides in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Dr. Sioris has always been a writer and scholar as well as a diplomat, and has a series of books, articles and monographs to his credit. He has particularly devoted himself to academic work since his retirement, and has received a doctoral award from Soka University in Tokyo and an honorary doctorate from Adamson University in Manila.
