Mr. Makoto Watanabe

Makoto Watanabe was born in Tokyo in 1936. He graduated from Tokyo University and entered the Foreign Ministry in 1959. He studied, as a Foreign Ministry trainee, at Swarthmore College in the United States, and served in Washington, D.C. (twice), Geneva, Manila and Amman, Jordan (as Ambassador). His last post in the Foreign Ministry was that of Chief of Protocol. While in the Foreign Ministry, he worked for the Emperor and Empress first in 1987 and then in 1994 when he took part in organizing their Majesties' official visits abroad.

In 1995, he left the Foreign Ministry and joined the Imperial Household Agency as Grand Master of the Ceremonies, which is something like the Chief of Protocol of the Palace. He was transferred to his present post, Grand Chamberlain to His Majesty The Emperor,  fifteen months later. His present job can be described as the private secretary to His Majesty.

His great-grandfather was Grand Steward for the Imperial Household to Emperor Meiji and his father is the only remaining class-mate of Emperor Showa at the age of 101.
