Sir Stephen Gomersall

Sir Stephen received his secondary education at Forest School, Snarebrook, and then proceeded to Queens College, Cambridge.  After receiving an M.A. from Cambridge, he went on to take an M.F.A. at Stanford University, California. In 1970 he entered the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and spent the years 1971-72 as a Japanese language student at Sheffield University before being posted to Tokyo as Third Secretary and later First Secretary, 1972-77. His next posting was as First Secretary in the Rhodesia Department, FCO, 1977-79,  and then from 1979-82 he was private secretary to the Lord Privy Seal. He spent the years 1982-86 as First Secretary in Washington, and then returned to Tokyo as Economic Counsellor, 1986-90.  From 1990-94 he was Head of the Security Policy department, FCO, and from 1998-99 was Director of International Security. In between he was Deputy Permanent Representative at the UK Mission to the United Nations in New York.  He has been serving as ambassador in Tokyo since July 1999.
